ANKARA –Hundreds of women gathered today at Güvenpark in Ankara to protest the rape and murder of ÖzgecanAslan in Mersin province. Women kicked and slappeda man who verbally harassed the womenas they marched down Yüksel Street. The harasser fled the scene.
The slogan "we're not in mourning, we're in rebellion" characterized the women's action, called by the People's Democratic Congress Women's Council. Marchers successfully forced back police who said the march was unauthorized.
"Whenever Erdoğan and the other managers of the AKP open their mouths, men kill women, harass them, rape them. If we're gathered here today and we're not leaving the squares, it's because the women's roles being given to us are no longer acceptable," said GamzeAğaçaya, speaking on behalf of the women present. "We're calling on everyone to engage in self-defense, to conquer the squares, and to heighten the struggle for women's resistance."
