Signature campaign calls for maximum punishment for Özgecan's killers

NEWS CENTER – An online campaign is collecting signatures for the demand "maximum punishment for the murderers who raped, burned and discardedÖzgecanAslan," with signatures to be delivered to Turkey's Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Family and Social Policies, Chief Prosecutor of the Supreme Court of Appeals and the General Secretary of Parliament.


Anger continuesin the case ÖzgecanAslanof Mersin province, who was raped, burned to death and abandoned after boarding a Mersin Tok company bus on February 12, by the driver, his son and his friend. The new signature campaign argues that the problem of gender inequality in Turkey will not be solved without holistic efforts to end the problem, disincentives for perpetrators of these crimes, and precautions against the escalating culture of violence.


The three demands of the signature campaign are: for the three killers to be immediately tried to the full extent of the law and for all concerned institutions to take responsibility for this; for all government ministries, especially the Family and Social Policies Ministry, to take emergency action to secure male-female equality, drawing on the expertise of civil society organizations with experience working against violence against women; and for immediate attention to implementing the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
