1 million signatures in 3 days for Özgecan

NEWS CENTER – In just 3 days, one million people signed the signature campaign calling forjustice for Özgecan Aslan and immediate action against femicide in Turkey.
After Özgecan Aslan, 20, was raped and burned to death in Mersin province, Gözde Salur (like Özgecan, a university student) started the signature campaign. It became the fastest growing such campaign in Turkey.
The petition, located at change.org/ozgecan, is addressed to the Family and Social Policies Ministry, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Prosecutor's Office of the Supreme Court of Appeals and the Parliament.
Signatoriesare calling for a transparent trial process; the implementation of the Istanbul and CEDAW Conventions and existing Turkish legislation regarding violence against women; and for the ministriesmentioned to consult lawyers, academics and civil society organizations with experience defending women's rights.
