RIHA – The two co-chairs of Rojava's Cizîre Canton, Hediye Yusuf and Ekrem Hiso, traveled to Suruç in the wake of a series of meetings with their counterparts from other cantons. There, they announced an upcoming international congress on the reconstruction of Kobanê.
Speaking in the townjust across the border from Kobanê, they called on Turkey to urgently open a humanitarian corridor to the city.
"All three cantons will come together to do all we can for Kobanê," said Hediye Yusuf. "We are going to hold an international congress so that we can carry out a strong project."
Ekrem Hiso called for international aid to Kobanê, which the congress would facilitate. However, aid will only be able to reach the citythrough a humanitarian corridor, which Turkey has so far failed to open.
"Kobanê defended the honor of all of humanity. It was thanks to the exemplary resistance of the YPG/YPJ fighters that Kobanê did not fall to Daesh," Ekrem reminded listeners. "Therefore, everyone needs to be mobilized for Kobanê."
So far, said the representatives of the easternmost Rojava canton, they had met with Kobanê Canton directors and YPG/YPJ forces to discuss what they could do for the reconstruction. They had also met with their counterparts from the Efrîn canton.
In the meetings, the foremost need that emerged was for Turkey to immediately open the Murşitpınar Border Gate north of Kobanê, as this is the only available road into the city due to the presence of Daesh. Foreign Ministers from all three cantons are holding diplomatic meetings now to push for the opening of a humanitarian corridor through Murşitpınar.
In addition, the reconstruction project will need to identify areas of damage in the city, which will require assistance from qualified personnel.
