WAN –TUYAD-DER, solidarity association for the families of the imprisoned, led a march to protest the treatment of children in Wan's M-Type prison, where children have been tortured and urged to join Daesh.
Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) provincial co-chair DeryaHayva, speaking at the march, called for those responsible for the violations of the children's rights to be punished. She said the AKP reserved its most revolting politics against women and children prisoners, especially in Wan (Turkish name Van). Children in the prisons reported that visitors had come to the prison to recruit them to Daesh.
"In five days of detention at the HakkâriPolice Department, child prisoner R.K. was held by the feet, had his head struck against the wall, was played tapes of prisoners being tortured with electricity and was repeatedly sworn at and insulted," said the co-mayor, sharing the results of her interviews with women prisoners. "From what we know, R.K. was detained without any evidence on the grounds that he assaulted a person who had come to Gever [in Hakkâri] with the goal of joining Daesh."
Members of a range of NGOs and political parties, including the HDP, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) and the Peace Mothers Parliament, joined TUYAD-DER at their Wan office for a march. The marchers chanted Kurdish slogans including "long live the prison resistance," "political prisoners are our dignity," and "long live President Apo," referring to Abdullah Öcalan.
The marchers held a five-minute sit-in before dispersing.
