KOBANÊ –The opening of the first market is a major event in the effort to rebuild the city of Kobanê, razed by Daesh attacks. Kobanê native Fîraz Kasim says that city residents were delighted to see him reopen his market, the people of Kobanê won't be able to meet their basic daily needs unless a humanitarian corridor is opened through the Mürşitpınar Border Gate at the border with Turkey.
Kobanê has become a ruin, littered with the mines and explosives left behind by Daesh, with little functioning infrastructure. Still, thousands of citizens have returned to the city to take part in the reconstruction operation and to make the city safe again.
Now, Fîraz has reopened the doors of his market, located on the Aleppo Road.Fîraz says that citizens asked him to reopen his shop. He retrieved the goods he could from the ruins of the shop, from cleaning products to nonperishable food, and has cleaned and restored the shelves.
"People are happy that there's now a market where they can get what they need, but there's only a limited selection. The city is blocked in three directions by Daesh," he said. "There needs to be a humanitarian corridor so that people don't suffer, so they can meet their daily needs."
