AMÛDÊ –In the Rojava city of Amûdê, Asayiş peacekeeping forces have arrested 58-year-old Şukri Ali Mehmud, who shot and killed his wife of 35 years, RebiyaEmînoMehmud.

Şükri Ali shot Rebiya, a 45-year-old mother of six, seven times. He is currently under questioning by asayişforces.

Süreya Mehmud, Rebiya's 18-year-old daughter, says her father often beat her mother and constantly sought excuses for fights.

"Still my mother would say, 'always know your father's worth.' But my father didn't have the same mindset," said Sureya. "My mother prayed and kept the fast. My father wasn't worthy of her."

"My father was always out and when he came home, he exploded at her," said Mizgîn, Rebiya's 25-year-old daughter. "Everyone loved my mother. She never bothered anyone. My father wasn't really known; people thought he wasn'ta problem. He would always swear at her and try to make her look bad in front of us."

Mehmud Behaldîn Mehmud, Rebiya's younger brother, said Şükri was always a problem. The family had intervened to try to change the situation several times, but had thought the problems had gone away in the last four years.

"Because of the children, my sister wasn't showing us the real situation," he said. "Women shouldn't accept this kind of cruelty. They shouldn't stay silent in the face of male abuse."
