ANTALYA – In the Mediterranean province of Antalya, women have formed a chorus of five thousand women signers to protest violence against women. According to chorus director and project coordinator HilalNesin, the women will perform a concert against femicide on March 8 with the hope of entering the Guinness Book of World Records.
Hilal, who has long been active against femicides, says she has watched as Antalya rose to first place for violence against women. She was shocked to see how little awareness there was in Antalya of the depth of the problem.
"There will be women in the chorus from 7 to 77," said Hilal. "Unfortunately we're living in a time when we have to convince people to be more aware of femicide. But the number of women who are concerned about this is not low." She said the process of forming the chorus involved listening to new, often painful stories, every day.
The five thousand women will gather at 1 p.m. on Sunday March 8 in Kent Squareto perform.
