NEWS CENTER - Dozens of MEPs in the European Parliament have issued a joint statement calling on the EU and European Commission to aid in the reconstruction of Kobanê. The MEPs stressed that they see the Kobanê resistance as a fight for democracy, human rights, a common future and women's liberation.
The statement drew attention to the savage attacks of the inhumane ISIS gangs on Kobanê and recalled that the Kurdish people, primarily the women, have waged a historic resistance in the YPG/YPJ defense units. They also mentioned the support of the coalition forces for the resistance.
The statement recalled that those who want to return have a lack of shelter in the town, which has been devastated to a wideextent. MEPs called on EU member states and international agencies to provide urgent support to the recently founded commission for the coordination of the reconstruction in the town, and to open a humanitarian corridor for the passage of wounded civilians and Kurdish fighters.
The MEPs behind the call are from different groups in the parliament—ranging from the Confederal Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left, Greens, Social Democrats, European Liberal Democrats to Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy Group, Christian Democrats and Conservative-Reformists.
