DENİZLİ – Dentist Deniz Demirci has been arrested, charged with making an insulting gesture when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's convoy passed through the city of Denizli.
Two women were arrested last year in Izmir on charges of insulting the President, who is notorious for opening legal cases against those who criticize him (including, recently, a case against a satirical magazine that depicted someone making an obscene gesture in the same frame as the President.)As the presidential convoy passed down Doktorlar Street in the Aegean city of Denizli, the president's police guard arrested local dentist Deniz Demirci, alleging that she made an obscene arm gesture with the meaning "up yours."
Deniz says she made no such gesture.
"When I came to examine things, the police came and arrested me," she explained.
Deniz was released from custody after giving testimony. The Denizli Bar has assigned a lawyer to Deniz.
