AMED –Volunteers organized visits yeserday to the Diyarbakır graves of YPJ, PKK, HPG and YPG fighters for the "Week of Heroes"—a week of remembrance and resistance in Northern Kurdistan in honor of those who have lost their lives in the struggle for freedom.

MEYA-DER, which organizes solidarity with the families of those lost in war in Mesopotamia, organized a group trip to the Yeniköy Cemetery to read prayers for the dead. The group also visited the graves of those who lost their lives on March 28, 2006, a day when Diyarbakır burned in a serhildan (popular uprising) that took place when police attacked a funeral ceremony for HPG fighters, killing 13.

The Week of Heroes lasts from March 21 to March 28.

MEYA-DER Co-Chair Ayşe Dicle said this week was a week to celebrate the continuing existence of the Kurdish people, won through resistance against external attacks. Ayşe spoke at a gathering outside the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Diyarbakır provincial building, where families and solidarity volunteers bore pictures of those who lost their lives in the struggle, as well as of famous PKK cadre members MahsumKorkmaz (Egit) and MazlumDoğan.
