60 women killed in March: 'this is a state of war'

NEWS CENTER –Turkey saw no let-up in the wave of femicide in March, with 60 women killed, 27 wounded, 10 raped and sexually abused and many experiencing violence while attempting to celebrate March 8, International Working Women's Day. JINHA's analysis of media reports of violence against women shows a 100% increase relative to February.


23 of the women slain were driven to commit suicide or allegedly committed suicide under suspicious circumstances. 11 died at the hands of their husbands when they requested a divorce or were in the midst of a divorce case.6 were killed by friends and relatives. In the village in Şırnak province where a property dispute broke out, three women were killed while trying to stop their relatives' gunfight.


Many of the 27 women reported wounded in March in the media were wounded in the course of police interventions against celebrations of March 8. 11 were wounded by husbands, ex-husbands or husbands who they were trying to divorce. Women cis and trans, child and adult were saw severe violence from men as diverse as their bosses, family members, teachers, dormitory supervisors and strangers. Two women were wounded by police while attending the NevinYıldırım case to support the women, who was given a life sentence for killing herself in defense against her rapist.


March saw reports of the sexual abuse of six girls and two boys, as well as the rape of two women. Two women and two girls reported being driven to prostitution, one a 17-year-old girl by her husband in Adana.


This month, women reported men repeatedly harassing them in a dorm in Kütahya. Yavuz G. Tacizden, an assistant principal in Mersin, attempted to rape and harass several children. Women also reported being harassed while attending March 8 celebrations in Düzce. Women from the group DÖDEF, celebrating Istanbul March 8, were threatened with violence at the celebrations. Women prisoners in the Gebze M Type prison also reported sexual harassment and physical abuse in the prison.


Two women were kidnapped to be forced to marry in March.
