ISTANBUL – The platform "We Will Stop Women Homicides" is preparing for a month of demonstrations across Turkey to take to the streets against the sentence reductions for femicide in Turkey, starting this Friday.

Since women from 14 provinces came together for a Turkey-wide platform meeting on March 22, they have been preparing for a month of action starting April 10. The first action will take place in the Black Sea city of Samsun to kick off the month of action.

The platform has been following femicide cases across Turkey, in which sentence reductions for perpetrators for femicide are common, closely. They say acquittal for femicide is common, frequently because women are blamed as "provoking" the attacks. They are calling for an aggravated life sentence for perpetrators of femicide in the wake of the murder of Özgecan Aslan, the university student killed in Mersin province. They are also calling for the Parliament to take urgent measures against femicide and hold a special assembly on the topic.
