MÛŞ – Thousands buried YPJ fighter Leyla Bingöl (nom de guerre Zîlan Baran), who died in the battle for Kobanê, in her hometown of Bulanik, in Muş province, Northern Kurdistan, yesterday.
Leyla was slain in the heat of the Kobanê resistance, on November 7 2014. Her body has now been buried in her hometown.
Bahattin Bingöl, Leyla's father, spoke at the ceremony, denouncing the cooperation of President Erdoğan's government in supporting the Daesh gangs who assaulted Kobanê.
"With Erdoğan's help, they tried to take Kobanê in 24 hours. They said they would pray their holiday prayer there," he said. "But they were wrong; the heroic children of the Kurdish people used their bodies as barricades to stop them."
At the funeral march, a crowd of thousands chanted slogans in praise of the Kurdish struggle and against Daesh. They bore the flags of the YPJ, YPG and posters of Leyla alongside posters of jailed PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan. Representatives from opposition parties Democratic Regions Party (DBP), Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), MEYA-DER (an organization supporting the families of those slain in war) and Peace Mothers Assembly members joined the ceremony.
