In the wake of Saudi Arabia's sudden execution of Indonesian domestic worker Siti Zainab Binti Duhri Rupa, who had been on death row for 15 years, the state has executed another Indonesian domestic worker, 37-year-old Karni Binti.
Around 1.5 million migrant workers work in Saudi Arabia. Many women migrant workers are domestic workers in Saudi households, where they face the risk of abuse. Siti Zainab was one of those women. On Wednesday, the Saudi government suddenly executed Siti Zainab, in a move that her family, the Indonesian government and Amnesty International all condemned.
The next day, it emerged, the government executed another Indonesian domestic worker, Karni Binti, by beheading. The day before the execution, Indonesian officials had evidently met with Karni Binti, at which point the Saudi government gave no warning that they planned to execute her the next day.
