EFRÎN – Women in Rojava are continuing to organize themselves into cantons, with the women's group Yekîtiya Star announcing the formation of 51 new women's communes in the town of Cinirêsê, in Efrîn canton.

"Communes are very important for women, in terms of political, military and social life," said Zazon Henan, local Yekîtiya Star organizer. At the meeting in the town center of Cindirêsê yesterday, women from the town and the surrounding villages debated their needs and how the communes would work. They then held elections for the communes' leadership. Every women's commune will have committees on social issues, education, defense, economic activity and young women.

Zazon described the communes as a reinforcement of the just and equal life that women lived in early history, before the rise of the patriarchal state.
