SULAYMANIYAH – Women's groups in the city of Sulaymaniyah, in the Federal Kurdistan Region, held an action yesterday demanding justice for local woman Jiyan, killed by her husband.
Jiyan's mother, Amine Ehmed Rehim, spoke at the action, calling on the Kurdistan Regional Government to charge her daughter's killer.
Women called on Kurdish political representatives to take effective action to stop femicide and ensure the perpetrator was charged in the murder, which took place several days ago. Jiyan was a mother of two. Her husband reportedly killed her with a blow from a stone.
"We are critiquing the Parliament's silence on this issue," said Leyla Ebdullah Mihemed, of the Union of Women of Kurdistan (Yekîtiya Jinên Kurdistanê) in a speech. The Kurdistan Regional Government Parliament requires that there be at least 30% female representatives, but the representatives have not yet led an initiative on femicide. "Women parliamentarians need to take a stand and have a position on these issues," said Leyla.
