NEWS CENTER – UNICEF has announced that over 940,000 children in Nepal are in urgent need in the wake of Saturday’s earthquake.
The death toll in the 7.9 quake is at least 3,400. As over 60 aftershocks continued in the following days, hundreds of thousands spent several nights in the open air to avoid the risk of death in collapsing buildings, in spite of rain and snow across the country. The existing infrastructural weaknesses in impoverished Nepal contributed to the scope of the disaster. Around half of Nepal’s population are below the poverty line.
“This crisis leaves children particularly vulnerable—limited access to safe water and sanitation will put children at great risk from waterborne diseases, while some children may have become separated from their families,” said UNICEF in a statement.
