NEWS CENTER – The Nigerian Army has announced via Twitter that 200 girls and 93 women abducted by Boko Haram have been freed.
Boko Haram has captured thousands of women and girls in its devastation of much of Nigeria over the past few years. Abducted women and girls report experiences of rape, forced marriage, violent abuse, and being forced into combat. The Nigerian government and international community have been the target of heavy criticism for standing by while Boko Haram devastates the country.
The women were rescued from four Boko Haram military camps in the Samrisa Forest area. The army said that the women were likely not the Chibok girls captured more than a year ago. Women have been pushing for those responsible to find the Chibok girls for over a year.
