NEWS CENTER – Civil society activists in Karachi have held protests for the last two days for slain NGO activist Sabeen Mahmud. The activists, who had a candlelight vigil last night, called for Sabeen’s killers to be found.
Sabeen was shot by unknown gunmen on Friday after leaving the public space she runs, Karachi’s The Second Floor (T2F). She had just hosted an event on the tens of thousands of missing people in Baluchistan. After the university originally slated to host the event received pressure from intelligence officers, Sabeen had moved it to T2F, calling it “Unsilencing Baluchistan, Part 2.” The event involved a Q&A with Baluchistan human rights activist Mama Qadeer and a documentary showing.
Civil society activists gathered on Tuesday at Karachi’s Press Club for a protest, then again last night for a candlelight vigil, reports the Tribune in Pakistan. ““We are all Sabeen. We won’t give in till there is justice for Sabeen. No one can silence us,” said Qurat Mirza of Women’s Action Forum.
The group plans to hold actions every day until the killers are found. Many suspect Pakistan’s ISI of being involved in the assassination.
Mama Qadeer says he has been receiving death threats since the Friday killing.
