MERSİN – Residents of the town of Tarsus, Turkey have named a street for femicide victim Özgecan Aslan. The street houses the family home of the university student.

When three men raped and killed Tarsus university student Özgecan Aslan in February, women across the country took to the street to denounce the wave of femicide emboldened by a misogynistic and patriarchal government in the country. Özgecan became a symbol of resistance for the women’s movement, who demanded an end to the preferential treatment for male perpetrators of violence against women.

The local neighborhood muhtar in the Mersin province town led the initiative to name the street which contains Özgecan Aslan’s family home after her. Today, Özgecan’s parents and siblings attended a ceremony to unveil the new street signs.
