AMED – Kobanê women's organizations have called for the reconstruction of women and children's centers destroyed during the war.
As the Kobanê reconstruction conference wound to a close yesterday in the city of Diyarbakır, Dilşahİbişpresented a report surveying the state of services for women's and children in the city as part of the work of the Final Declaration Committee.
Before the war, Kobanê had a range of institutions and spaces for women that opened since 2012, in the early days of the Rojava revolution. Women's movement organization Yekîtiya Star operated a number of support services, educational programs and educational courses for women.
Today, women returning to the city in the wake of the war are in urgent need of psychological support. Yekîtiya Star has moved from its destroyed former building to a new women's center. The building is currently 50% functional, with eight rooms in use.
Before the war, Kobanê had one Women's House (an institution for resolving women's problems through consensus and legal support); an academy for cultural and social education called Akademiya Star a Ramanê; the Amargî Atelier, which provided sewing training to women; a support center for women widowed in war called KomeleyaRuhelat; and the institution Syrian Women's Initiative.
The report called for the reconstruction process to prioritize rebuilding of women's academies and children's and women's ateliers.
