AMED – As the Kobanê Reconstruction Conference came to an end in Diyarbakır yesterday, conference decisions stressed the need for the city's reconstruction to emphasize democracy, environmental values and women's liberation.
Saturday's and Sunday's conference involved attendance from all four parts of Kurdistan as well as European representatives. The conference's final announcement stressed the Kurdish unity formed in the Kobanê resistance, in which volunteers from all four parts of Kurdistan headed to the front to defend the besieged city. A 15-person committee will lead the reconstruction and an international campaign for the city.
The reconstruction plan includes the immediate opening of women's houses, community living centers, food distribution points and health centers to supply the needs of returning Kobanê citizens and enhance their capacity to rebuild.
In the conference's final sessions, unions in Turkey announced a number of support actions that brought the conference room to its feet in applause. 12,000 workers affiliated with Turkey's union confederation DİSK are ready to travel to Kobanê to volunteer in the reconstruction, unions announced. Turkey's Construction Workers' Union announced that they would form a commission of Kurdish, Turkish, Laz and Austrian workers to head to Kobanê to construct a community clinic.
The conference called for international pressure for Turkey to open the border gate with Kobanê. Conference delegates have decided to call an international conference on the Kobanê reconstruction to help coordinate an international campaign for the city.
The conference room erupted in applause and chants of "long live the Kobanê resistance" as the two-day event came to a close.
