NEWS CENTER – UN Women has called for support for women affected by the earthquake in Nepal, 40,000 of whom are at high risk of sexual violence.

Multiple studies show that women are particularly at risk for sexual violence after natural disasters. After the earthquake in Nepal whose most recent death toll is over 7,000, earthquake victims are living in 16 crowded camps in the Kathmandu Valley. These conditions lay the ground for sexual violence. UN Women says 40,000 women in Nepal are currently at high risk for sexual violence. 126,000 pregnant women will need medical assistance.

UN Women will undertake sensitivity trainings and found women's spaces in the camps. They also plan to extend psychological services to women.
