ISTANBUL – Media reports show that Turkey witnessed 22 known femicides in April, along with 10 suspicious deaths presented as suicides.
According to the report, prepared by the platform "We Will Stop Women Homicides," the majority of femicides in April took place in Istanbul, followed by Ankara, Adana and Uşak.
27% of the women died for asking for a divorce or separation. 22% were justified by "jealousy" and 9% because the woman wanted to make a decision about her own life. 5% of the women were killed because they resisted rape and 5% for economic reasons. The rest of the women died for reasons unknown. Besides the femicides, 10 more women died in suspicious circumstances that were recorded as suicide.
Almost half of the women were killed by a husband, ex-husband or boyfriend. The most common murder weapons were firearms and knives.
The Platform says that the wave of actions across Turkey calling for aggravated life in prison for femicide perpetrators is responsible for the fall in numbers relative to March.
