Police arrest five at Istanbul march for Ferinaz

ISTANBUL - Police have detained five Kurds from Rojava in a group that attempted to stage a protest at Istanbul’s iconic Taksim Square to commemorate the death of a Kurdish woman in Iran.

FerinazXosrawanî, 25, fell to her death from the fourth floor of a hotel in Iran’s Kurdish-majority city of Mahabad on May 4 whiletrying to escape a rape attempt by an Intelligence Ministry employee.

On May 10, around 100 Kurds gathered at noon at Taksim Square, marching with photos of Ferinaz.

Turkish police initially tried to remove flags from the protesters’ hands. Police detained five Kurds in a scuffle before the march dispersed.
