ISTANBUL – Turkey is Europe's leader for trans murders, according to the group Transgender Europe (TGEU). Brazil is the top country in the world.
TGEU publishes an index of 22 criteria for trans rights in Europe, including legal gender recognition, asylum, bias speech/violence, non-discrimination and family rights. Turkey only fulfills four of these criteria, by allowing trans people the bare minimum rights of being able to have transitional surgery, change their names and marry someone of the opposite gender. Turkey is also one of 23 countries in the world that require proof of sterilization for a person to transition.
With 689 murders of trans women between 2008 and 2014, Brazil has the most homicides of trans people in the world.
