ISTANBUL – Turkish courts have dropped charges against singer Nihat Doğan related to an aggressive sexist Tweet that he posted after the femicide case of Özgecan Aslan in Mersin province.

20-year-old Özgecan Aslan was raped and killed by three men in Turkey's Mersin province, launching a wave of protests against femicide across Turkey. "You wear mini skirts and get naked, and you won't scream at the top of your voices either when the secular system's immoral perverts harass you," singer Nihat Doğan Tweeted on February 14, 2015, soon after the killing came to light. Recently, a court ruled to drop charges against the singer and celebrity, who has 464,000 Twitter followers.

The lawyers who filed charges against Nihat have objected to the dropping of charges. They said that the Tweet encouraged violence and denigrated segments of society.
