NEWS CENTER - The Women's Freedom Assembly in Turkey has issued an urgent call for women around the world to stop war in the country.
Since Turkish soldiers started an assault on the town of Silopi, in Northern Kurdistan (in Turkey), attacks have escalated around the region--most recently in the town of Silvan, in Diyarbakır province. A delegation of members of women's group Women's Freedom Assembly (KÖM) has been traveling to the towns, attempting to observe the situations for civilians. The group has now issued an urgent call for women around the world to raise their voices against attempted massacres of civilians in Turkey.
The delegation reported that communication was cut to the town of Silvan, with military shutting down the roads to prevent access. Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Parliamentary representatives finally managed to enter to observe, but they too, lost communication. Local officials told the delegation that all operations were coming directly from the Turkish capital in Ankara and that they had no power in the situation.
"We witnessed the results of this kind of isolation in Silopi last week, in Varto on Sunday, and today the same is happening in Silvan. Whenever towns are closed down, the Kurdish people living there are left face to face with the threat of massacre," wrote the women.
"We call all women to raise their voices against this massacre attempt, in the most urgent manner possible!" the statement concluded.
