ISTANBUL – Police attacked a gathering of Peace Bloc activists in the city of Istanbul, Turkey, arresting many demonstrators and wounding a JINHA reporter.
From September 4 to 12, the Turkish state held the Kurdish town of Cizre under a total blockade, killing 21 residents and leaving residents trapped in their homes without food or water. Yesterday, the coalition organization Peace Bloc attempted to hold an action in solidarity with Cizre in downtown Istanbul. Police ordered the crowd to disperse while demonstrators gave speeches at the gathering. Police deployed large volumes of tear gas. As the crowd attempted to flee into the side streets, police attacked them with water cannons and rubber bullets, arresting many.
JINHA reporter Öykü Dilara Keskin was lightly wounded by a police rubber bullet to her back.
