ISTANBUL – The anti-war group the Peace Mothers have started a sit-in at local AKP headquarters in Istanbul, Turkey after receiving no answer to their requests to meet with officials about ending the war in the counry.
Turkey’s AKP has escalated attacks against civilians and re-ignited fighting in Northern Kurdistan (in Turkey) in the wake of their electoral defeat in June. Members of the anti-war group the Peace Mothers Assembly headed today to the AKP’s provincial headquarters in the city of Istanbul. They hoped to meet with AKP representatives about stopping the war.
Police stopped the mothers, who responded by starting a sit-in at the building. When police told the women that they needed an appointment, one Peace Mother replied angrily that “a mother’s heart” was the only appointment they needed. The women’s sit-in is ongoing.
