WASHINGTON – Guttmacher Institute has created a short video presenting worldwide statistics of unsafe abortion and declared that every year 47 thousand women die from complications of unsafe abortion.
Some of the highest abortion rates in the world are at Latin America and Africa where abortion is highly restricted in almost every country. According to Guttmacher, in the developing world 222 million women want to avoid pregnancy but are not using a modern contraceptive method. Estimates of the institute indicate that if these women’s family planning needs and modern contraceptive methods were met, unintented pregnancy would decline from 80 million to 26 million annualy.
Abortions by untrained providers or under unsanitary conditions cause complications and maternal deaths.
Moreover, based on a report by the World Health Organization and Guttmacher Institute published in January, 2012, the rate of unsafe abortion worldwide has been increasing day by day.
They point out that unsafe abortion increases faster than expected and the proportion of unsafe abortion in 1995 was %44 which increased to %49 in 2008.
