GIRKÊ LEGÊ – Women serving in the local governments of the cantons of Rojava gathered for the First Women’s Municipality Conference in the city of Rimêlan.

Women municipal employees headed to Rimêlan in Rojava’s Cizire Canton to kick off the First Women’s Municipality Conference. 220 delegates attended the conference, whose slogan is, “we will create an ecological and free society with women’s leadership.”

Sûad Hisên, co-chair of the municipality of Çil Axa, gave the opening speech, noting that PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) leader Abdullah Öcalan’s ideas had held women to take a leading role in the project of democratic autonomy. Kobanê municipal co-chair Şêrîn Kobanê also spoke at the conference.

“As you know, Kobanê has gone through a very difficult time,” said Şêrin. “But our people, especially women, have shown a great resistance. Just as Kurdish women took their place in the resistance, now they are taking a role in the work of rebuilding. Women are actively joining municipal projects. And we believe that this conference will be a light to all women municipal workers and help to strengthen their work.”

The conference is ongoing with speeches and debates.
