NEWS CENTER – China has passed the country’s first ever law addressing domestic violence against women.
According to the Guardian, for the first time in China’s history, a law addressing domestic violence against women has been passed. The law, which will become effective March 1, addresses all forms of domestic violence, including psychological violence. It also simplifies the restraining order process.
According to official state statistics, one in four Chinese women have experienced domestic violence, but no more than 50,000 women in the country of 1.35 billion file complaints about the violence. The new law addresses married couples and domestic partners, but does not address LGBTQ couples or the issue of sexual violence within a marriage or partnership.
Feminists in China have campaigned for the prevention of domestic violence for years, including the “bloody brides” protest carried out by two of the five feminists arrested for several weeks in 2015. In 2014, after objection by feminists, the death sentence was removed for Li Yan, who killed her abusive husband in 2010.
