Children's rights defender Atena Daemi released in Iran

Atena Daemi, a children's and women's rights activist, was arrested on November 21,2014. Atena was convicted of "gathering and colluding against national security," "spreading propaganda against the system," "insulting the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Supreme Leader," and concealing evidence. Atena's existing health conditions, including eye, skin and stomach problems, began when she was first arrested. Atena suffered from a hormone imbalance, guards refused to allow her medical treatment. Amnesty International and many NGOs around the world launched an international campaign for her. Atena was released on bail on February 15,2016. She paid a heavy bail of 700 million Tomans (approximately US$232,000), according to reports, which also stated that the 14-year sentence is still in effect.

Atena was also convicted of attending actions for children in Kobanê and Gaza, as well as in support of Reyhaneh Jabbari, the woman arrested in Iran for killing her rapist.
