Sur people object to expropriation

AMED – A law commission has been formed against "urgent expropriation" which has been declared in the Sur district of Diyarbakır by cabinet decision. As nearly a thousand families applied to the law commission, the commission has applied for annulment upon the objection of the people.
As 24-hour curfew has continued in the Sur district of Diyarbakır, urgent expropriation has been declared on March 21 in the Sur district of Diyarbakır by cabinet decision. Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality, Sur Municipality, Diyarbakır Bar Association and Mesopotamia Jurists Association (MHD) said the decision is lawlessness and the historic buildings and culture in the district will be destroyed by the decision of expropriation. The Human Rights Association, Diyarbakır Bar Association, Mesopotamia Jurists Association (MHD), Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality) have formed a law commission and they received the objection of Sur people to the decision of expropriation. The commission has opened 300 separate cases against the decision until now.
Lawyer Devrim Barış Baran pointed out that nearly a thousand families applied to the law commission against the decision of the expropriation. She said, “We have opened 300 separate cases against the decision until now. Meanwhile, the high point is that the people in Sur say they will never leave their houses.”
