80-year-old Zelîxe succeed by believing in herself

EFRÎN – Uneducated Zelîxe Reşîd wasn’t believed that she could learn how to read and write. However, she believed in herself and learns how to read and write in Kurdish. A community without its language is soulless,” said Zelîxe. She adds soul to the Kurdish language and her people with her poems.

The struggle for life of the people in Efrîn Canton of Rojava continues against the attacks, siege and embargo of oppressive forces. 80-year-old Zelîxe Reşîd is from Emana village of Raco. Her tenacity, pertinacity and story show how the attacks and siege are useless. Zelîxe uses her pencil and paper for using Kurdish language against standardized the perception of nation-states. She contributes the struggle by learning her native language Kurdish. Mother of seven Zelîxe adds soul to the Kurdish language and her people with her poems.


Zelîxe said that Kurdish people could learn write and read due to the pressure of the Baath regime. She told what happened that time, “The Baath regime applied pressure to us. We had had the chance to learn our language, as Kurdish people. We had this chance with the Rojava Revolution. Everyone must learn writing and reading in Kurdish while we have this chance. No ones believed in me to learn writing and reading due to I was old. However, I believed in myself and learn how to read and write.


“I love the poems and I sometimes write poems. I sent some of my poems to be published. The people must protect their historical values. I read many story books and historic books. All I want is that the children of Kurdish people grow with their own language. Send your children to Kurdish schools. Don’t forget that a community without its language is soulless.”
