Families of journalists battered by police

AMED – Police raided the houses of 24 Azadiya Welat journalists, who had recently been detained during a raid on office of newspaper, family members expressed that they were battered and their jewellery were taken by police. “We’ll continue to work instead of our children, we won’t be scared,” said families.

Police raided the houses of 24 Azadiya Welat journalists, who had been detained on August 28 during a raid on the office of the only Kurdish daily in Turkey. The doors of houses were broken and family members were battered and threatened by police.

About 50 police officers broke the door of İbrahim Bayram’s house and beat up Bayram’s family members during the raid conducted around at 3 a.m. “Tens of police officers entered our home by breaking our door. We were four people at home. They attacked us and 10 police officers blockaded each of us and battered us,” said families.

Minte Bayram said, “I told the police to not beat my son when I saw they were beating him. Then, police beat my feet by using their weapons. I still cannot walk.” Minte also said their jewellery and some amount of money were taken by police.

Sister of İbrahim Bayram, Heybet Bayram said that the police officers battered and threatened them, “They they knocked the door, we asked who you are. They told us they were police so we asked their cards. That’s our right to ask their cards to know if they are police. They insulted and threatened us in response to this. They broke the door and entered our home. They attacked us. They didn’t search any thing just broke everything.”

Beritan Akgün, the wife of Mehmet Emin Akgün who had been detained during the raid on the daily, stated that she hadn’t been at home during the house raid, “I wasn’t at home when they raided my home. They entered the home by breaking the door. My husband is detained now; I have distributed the daily instead of him now. We’ll continue to work.”
