AMED – Fatma Çevik is one of women, who had been forcibly displaced from Sur, where siege has continued to be imposed. Fatma, who lived in Sur for 50 years, said, “All I want is to see Sur again” and underlined that the life and solidarity in Sur had been attacked.

The heroic resistance lasted for 103 days in Sur left behind a lot of stories. There were stories before clashes maintained months and there are stories now. “24-hour curfew” had been declared in December 2, 2015 in the Sur district of Diyarbakır and following the declaration of the curfew, siege began in the town and hundreds of homes were demolished. Sur people have been returning to the town against those who want to wipe off the history and lives in Sur. Fatma Çevik had had to leave her home, where she lived for 50 years, in the Fatihpaşa Neighborhood due to the attacks. Fatma expressed that she left her every memory in her home and the streets of Sur.

Fatma stayed at her home when the curfew was declared on December in Sur and she passed 20 days under the last siege. Fatma said she witnessed the resistance. Fatma goes to Sur in order to keep her memories alive, “Months have passed, they demolished my home; however I am ready to go there and set up a tent to continue live in Sur,” said Fatma.

Fatma reminded the history, how people shared everything with each other in solidarity, “They say they will build housings in Sur. They must ask us if we want these housings. We don’t want the housings. We will build our own homes again if they leave Sur to us. Hundreds of people think like me. All people say they want to return their demolished homes and say, “I don’t give my home”. We don’t want the housings they will build even if these houses are more comfortable.

“I am still dreaming to set up tent on my home debris, I am so unhappy to not go there due to the curfew. There was my home before, I washed the yard when I woke up and then my neighbors visited me and we had tea together. I miss these days. All I want is to see Sur again.”
