AMED – Reaction to trustees that the AKP government is planning to appoint to the municipalities held by the DBP (Democratic Regions Party) has continued to rise. Diyarbakır women said they wouldn’t recognize the trustees if the government didn’t recognize their will and they wouldn’t allow them to work.
A new Statutory Decree was published in the Official Gazette and according to the Statutory Decree, trustees can be appointed to the municipalities. Diyarbakır women said they would declare “war” and wouldn’t pay any tax if the AKP government appoints trustees to the municipalities. Diyarbakır people say “bring it on” as a respond to the government that doesn’t recognize the people’s will.
Ayşe Can, who lives in the Bağlar district of Diyarbakır said, “Even one Kurd shouldn’t accept that. Women, who work in municipalities, co-mayors and all people, should raise and stand up for people’s will. If we keep silent against this, we will face difficult situation.”
Peace Mothers member Nezahat Teke underlined that the elected people in the municipalities were elected by people, “The municipalities in this region have been held by the DBP and HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) for more than 20 years. The system of co-mayors was put into practice. The state says they will appoint trustees to the municipalities; this is an insult to peoples’ will. If they trust themselves, then let’s hold an early election. If they appoint trustees to our municipalities without recognizing our vote, we won’t allow the trustees to work; we won’t pay any bill and tax. If they don’t recognize me, I won’t recognize them.”
Mürüvvet Demir said, “They didn’t accept us to the parliament when we won 80 representatives. They will not accept us whatever we do. This country talks about democracy while some of our co-mayors are behind the bars and now it wants to appoint trustees to municipalities by ignoring the peoples’ will. They are still hungry for killing and they are trying to solve this issue by appointing trustees. People elected the mayors. We won’t recognize their trustees if they don’t recognize our will. All people should raise and stand up for their votes.”
