AMED- Sur people react to the appointment of trustees to Sur Municipality following the statements of Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu targeted municipalities held by the DBP. “They killed us and now set their eye on our will,” said Sur people and stated that they wouldn’t recognize the trustees.

As Diyarbakır Governorate hasn’t made any notification to municipalities after the announcements of the appointment of trustees to Sur and Silvan municipalities held by the DBP (Democratic Regions Party), Sur people say they will not recognize the trustees.

Hatice Faran is one of residents in Sur. She stated that the people wouldn’t recognize the appointment of trustees and said, “The people elected mayors and council members, they don’t want the trustees in Sur. Why does mayor chosen by state govern the municipality not mayor elected by people? The people want to see their mayors and council members elected by them. Those who elected by the people always serve the people not state. Appointing trustees to municipalities is an attack to people’s will. As Sur people, we will not recognize the trustees.”

Another woman Hidayet Ata, meanwhile, said, “We will not recognize the appointed trustees. As Sur people, we had really difficult times and this municipality always stands by us. We will not recognize any trustees. They didn’t stand by us while we had difficult times. They devastated Sur and killed us. Now, they are seizing our will; however, we will not accept that.”
