ISTANBUL – “We decide how we go out,” said women by stating that they stand by Ayşegül Terzi who was subjected to sexual and physical attack for wearing a short by Abdullah Çakıroğlu.

Ayşegül Terzi took a bus in Maslak/Istanbul to go to home on September 12; however, she was subjected to a sexual and physical attack by a man. The attacker’s identitying information and address were determined two weeks later of the incident and he was detained in Üsküdar. Detained 35-year-old Abdullah Çakıroğulu was released yesterday by prosecution.

Abdullah was detained last night again on women’s reaction to his release. The ground of his detention is his words not his attack on a woman. Feminists, who say they will continue to struggle against the system that protects the men, say “We will follow this case.”

Sevda Nur Bayram; “Everyone can wear what they want, if they want, they can wear shorts, mini skirts or headscarf. As women, we decide what we wear when we go out. We have struggled for our rights for centuries; they try to take our achievements from us. But, we will not give our rights. Our struggle and resistance will continue.”

Diber Sünnetçioğlu; “I still cannot believe that such incident happens. The assaulter man says he acted in accordance with Islam. We do not accept that and we wear clothes and go out as we want.”

Sevinç Kaya; “They think they can do whatever they want. We face uncomfortable glances in buses and metrobuses every day. We have struggled against male-dominated system for years and our struggle will continue. We will continue to wear short and resist.”
