‘Özgür Gündem Dungeon’ published

MÊRDÎN- The most significant support to Özgür Gündem daily comes from female prisoners. Female prisoners, among them JINHA editor Zehra Doğan, in Mardin E Type Prison have published a newspaper named, “Özgür Gündem Dungeon”.
Özgür Gündem daily was shut down temporarily on charge of “making propaganda of an [illegal] organization” by Istanbul 8th Court of Peace. Police raided the office of daily on August 16 without making any notification. The staff members of the daily were detained by being battering and the office was sealed. The colleagues and citizens didn’t leave the daily by gathering in front of both the Özgür Gündem daily office and courthouses and shouting the slogan, “Free press cannot be silenced.” As detained 24 journalists were released, the Chief Editor Bilir Kaya and Editor in Chief İnan Kızılkaya were sent to jail on charge of “being member of an [illegal] organization.” All news in the newspaper have been hand-written by female prisoners. There are women, politics, culture, art and ecology pages and also a page for Kurdish language.

The eight-page newspaper was published on September 12 with headline reads, “Political prisoners in the dungeon resist for Öcalan. The subhead of the newspaper read, “According to the state, being from Nusaybin means treason.”
As all news is based on true events, there are interviews with female prisoners about impression, detention and violation of right in the prison. There are also articles of Nudem Durak, Roj Çem Partizan, Merge Polat, Öznur Değer and Diljin Dinç in the newspaper.
