19 academics to open ‘an alternative academy’

KOCAELI – 19 academics, who are dismissed from Kocaeli University for demanding peace against war, are going to open an alternative academy in Sabancı Cultural Center on September 28. Many academics and NGOs will attend the opening of the academy.

Academics gathered in Istanbul Taksim Gören Hotel on January 11 and released a statement titled “We will not be a party to this crime” against the blockades imposed on cities and districts of Kurdistan by the AKP ruling power and its palace. The academics demanded the state to abandon its deliberate massacre and deportation of Kurdish and other peoples in the region, and they demanded the government to prepare the conditions for negotiations and create a road map that would lead to a lasting peace which includes the demands of the Kurdish political movement and inclusion of independent observers from broad sections of society in these negotiations. After the statement, hundreds of academics signed the statement titled “We will not be a party to this crime”.

The academics have been dismissed from their universities just for demanding peace against war. 19 academics in Kocaeli University were also dismissed. These 19 academics are going to open “an alternative academy” in Sabancı Cultural Center on September 28 and they will begin the academic year with the lesson titled, “Alternative Opening”.

Dr. Gül Koksal, Assoc. Dr. Güven Bakırezer, Assoc. Dr. Hakan Koçak, Assoc. Dr. Hülya Kendir, Prof. Dr. Kuvvet Lordoğlu, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Cengiz Erçin, Asst. Assoc. Dr. Mehmet Rauf Kesici, Asst. Assoc. Dr. Mehmet Ruhi Demiray, Prof. Dr. Nilay Etiler, Prof. Dr. Onur Hamzaoğlu, Assoc. Dr. Özlem Özkan, Prof. Dr. Ümit Biçer, Prof. Dr. Veli Deniz, Assoc. Dr. Yücel Demirer, Prof. Dr. Zelal Ekinci.

One of the academics, Nilay Etiler spoke to JINHA and said, “Many our academics friends around Turkey will come to support us. The new academy will have principles and do science. First, we will start with weekly seminars and then we will release researches and reports. The door of our academy opens to all academics and Kocaeli people.”
