AMED – “Eğitim Sen cannot be annihilated with detention and arrests,” said Diyarbakır Eğitim-Sen No. 1 Branch Co-chair Saliha Zorlu by stating their union is being targeted and their all works have been blocked by the ruling power.

Detention and arrests against teachers, who have been suspended from their duties for their union activities, continue. 4300 teachers, mostly members of Eğitim Sen (the Education and Science Workers Union), have been suspended from their duties in one day. As seven of teachers have been jailed, 16 teachers are still in custody. Diyarbakır Eğitim-Sen No. 1 Branch Co-chair Saliha Zorlu underlined that Eğitim Sen and KESK (the Confederation of Public Employees' Trade Unions) have been targeted by the ruling power.

Saliha said, “The education in Diyarbakır is actually stopped. In some schools, more than 30 teachers have been suspended from their duties; there are not teachers in the schools. Therefore, the students don’t go to schools. Many of parents do not send their children to school. They decide to not send their children until their teachers come back to schools. The education system is stopped.”

Saliha also underlined that they will never keep silent against this unlawfulness and she stated that they don’t even know the reason for suspension of their union members and all their democratic actions against this unlawfulness have been attacked. She said, “We are carrying out action in order to tell the unlawfulness to public opinion; however, our legitimate and democratic actions have been tried to be blocked with incredible impression and force.”

Saliha said they would continue to resist by “raising our voice” against arrests and impression. Saliha also said, “These arrests and detention may increase. We will carry out our works until our last friend takes the job back. Detention of our one friend is a responsible for us. We continue to say our friends demands. Detention and arrests cannot oppress Egitim Sen.”
