ISTANBUL – A 24-year-old university student in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul has defended her life by killing the taxi driver who was harassing her.
24-year-old Semra, a forestry student at Istanbul University, has killed the taxi driver who was harassing her. Semra defended her life by killing the taxi driver with a knife located under the hand brake of the vehicle. Semra had repeatedly had to move because of the harassment of taxi drive Hıdır Doğan. When Hıdır Doğan forced Semra into his vehicle and harassed her, the young woman attempted to stop him by reaching for the knife under the handbrake of the vehicle and stabbing him at random.
Hıdır Doğan passed away of wounds to his heart and back. Semra went to the military police station to turn herself in. In her testimony, Semra said that “I didn’t know I had killed him. My goal was to commit suicide by driving the car off a cliff.” Semra was taken to the courthouse and detained pending trial.
The University Women’s Collective issued a written statement on the incident.
“We are facing the fact that the masculine justice system punishes Semra, who defended her life and was imprisoned, along with all other women like her. Just like we freed Çilem Doğan with the solidarity we have woven, we will follow the cases of all women who defend their lives until they receive real justice,” said the collective.
