GIRKÊLEGÊ – Women working in the city government in the Rojava city of GirkêLegê say that in spite of water shortages, they will continue working to green the city by reclaiming long desiccated rose gardens.

Macide Eli, who works for the city government in the city (located in Cizîrê Canton), has been involved in the local Ecology Committee since its founding three months ago. Water shortages have been the greatest barrier to the Ecology Committee's efforts to green the city.

After the Ba'ath regime abandoned the city's 20 rose gardens to dry out, the committee's latest project has been focused on bringing these garden spaces back to life. So far, they have planted seedlings and saplings in two of the gardens. Macide says the committee of mostly women will continue their work.

"Women have a tie to nature," she said. "If they want to succeed, they can."
