NEWS CENTER - Atena Daemi, a children's and women's rights activist, had a heart attack due to denial of medical attention in Iran's Evin Prîson.

Atena, who was initially arrested in October 2014, was issued a seven-year jail sentence for attending actions for children in Kobanê and Gaza, as well as in support of Reyhaneh Jabbari, the woman arrested in Iran for killing her rapist. Atena, a long time women's rights activist, began her sentence on July 4.

Atena's existing health conditions, including eye, skin and stomach problems, began when she was first arrested. Recently, when Atena was suffering from a hormone imbalance, guards refused to allow her medical treatment. Atena suffered a heart attack as a result of the stress and denial of medical treatment. After being briefly seen in the clinic, she was returned to prison.
