KOBANÊ - In the city of Kobanê, Rojava, preparations are underway for the new school year to begin in September.

The city of Kobanê in the Rojava autonomous region in Syria became famous for its heroic resistance against a Daesh siege launched in September of last year. Now, residents have returned to the devastated city and are preparing for the new school year. School doors will open on September 7.

The canton's Democratic Society Education Congress decided in June to send six delegates to all the schools in the canton to assess their needs. They have found that the majority of the schools in the city have been destroyed; the city will be starting the new school year with five schools operational. In the villages of the canton, all schools will be open.

The congress also decided to provide primary school materials in Kurdish and educators have developed a curriculum for this. Hundreds of teachers have now been trained in Kurdish language education. 180 teachers are at the ready to teach in Kurdish, and other Kurdish language educational programs are ongoing. The Kurdish Language Institution (SZK) also has 450 teachers ready to provide Kurdish language education at three levels.
