MÊRDÎN - Residents of the town of Nusaybin in Northern Kurdistan (Turkey) dug self-defense trenches, with women ululating as they joined the trench-digging effort.

For several days, police have been attacking the Yenişehir neighborhood in the town of Nusaybin, located in Mardin province. The local people had been building barricades to stop the police, but yesterday started to dig trenches in the streets, as residents of other Nusaybin neighborhoods have done.

Hundreds of neighborhood residents joined in the effort, with some playing drums and dancing Kurdish folk dances around the trenches. Notably, women took a key part in the digging, ululating and waving flags in the Kurdish colors of red, yellow and green as they worked. As children joined in the work, the residents applauded.
